|Reaching for the American Dream: Pulitzer Prize-Winning Novels|
Event Type: ADULT PROGRAM - REGISTERED|
Start Time: 6:30 PM
End Time: 8:00 PM
Through five Pulitzer-winning novels, this virtual discussion series looks at how authors have depicted the striving to better oneself and achieve the American dream – and how, despite our efforts, we often end up unfulfilled or clashing with other elements of society. Your moderator is Paul Grondahl, author, award-winning journalist, Guilderland resident and the current Director of the New York State Writers Institute, at University at Albany. The five books you will be reading include (in this order, but may be subject to change): The Underground Railroad, by Colson Whitehead; Interpreter of Maladies, by Jhumpa Lahiri; Humboldt's Gift, by Saul Bellow; American Pastoral, by Philip Roth; and A Visit from the Goon Squad, by Jennifer Egan.
The dates of the programs are:
February 3, 17; March 17, 31; April 14. You need to register just once, on the February 3 date, and your name will be added to all five dates.
Once you have registered, we will contact you to arrange for curbside pickup of the five books that are part of the series along with a syllabus. We encourage you to read all the books in entirety; in a few cases, we may suggest selected readings, to encourage active participation throughout the series. We will send you a link to the virtual session the night before each scheduled date, so be sure to provide your email.
Limited to 15 people; due to anticipated interest in the program, please plan to attend all five sessions.
