George Washington: Surveyor

 Join V. Frederick Rickey, retired Professor of Mathematics at West Point, for a talk about the early career of George Washington, particularly his experience as a surveyor. Rickey has worked in George Washington's papers at the Library of Congress. As a historian of mathematics, Rickey will talk about concepts of algebra and geometry in the 18th century, and will also discuss his good luck in finding portions of Washington's papers outside the LOC. Finally, he willtalk about the importance of working with originals instead of digitized online copies--sometimes the originals hid information that the digital copies can't show.
